“Be Still and Know that I Am God”
“Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; He is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.” Psalm 62:5-8
My youngest daughter was only two when we took her on her first beach trip. Like many young children seeing the ocean for the first time she was overwhelmed and afraid. She begged to be picked up and so, I picked her up and held her wrapped tightly in my arms. She turned her face away from the ocean and buried her cheek into my chest, and then she was still…and I mean still. Not one inch of her body did she move. She stayed that way for a long time as I walked with her along the shore talking to her, soothing and reassuring her. Eventually she let me put her down, still holding her hand. Placing her trust in my words of reassurance and my love for her, she was soon joyfully playing in the sand and putting her toes in the ocean.
Oh that we would respond as my child did when we are faced with circumstances and trials that scare us and threaten to overwhelm us! We often give full leash to our fears and anxiety until we have worked ourselves into a frenzy for all to see or sometimes we lock ourselves into a prison we build in our minds and become tortured and paralyzed with fear and hopelessness.
How much better off would you be if your first response to the overwhelming and fearful circumstances and trials that come during life’s journey is to cry out to God? Let Him pick you up and wrap His all-powerful arms around you, focus your eyes on Him, and listen to His words of love, comfort, and reassurance, all the while being perfectly still and knowing He is God.
Father,
You are the all-powerful, almighty God. I praise you that I can rest in your love and goodness. I release to you those things in my life that cause me to be fearful and overwhelmed. Wrap me in your arms and comfort me. Fill me with your hope and peace.
In your son Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
